Mount Murphy is a glacially dissected basaltic-trachytic shield volcano that formed during the Miocene. A Potassium-Argon date on a cone of 900,000 years indicates that flank activity resumed much later during the Pleistocene (LeMasurier, 1972; LeMasurier et al., 1990).
