Negros de Aras (or El Negrillar) is a monogenetic volcanic field ~20 km N of Socompa volcano and W of the Cordón de Púlar. There are 44 scoria cones and 22 additional lava flow source vents within a 190 km2 area (Aguilera et al., 2022). Though this has been interpreted to be a Holocene field by some researchers (Moreno 1985, pers. comm.; de Silva and Francis, 1991), others believe it is older (Gardeweg, 1993, pers. comm.). Aguilera et al. (2022) did not consider any of the scoria cones to be younger than the 100 ka La Poruna cone (~250 km N). The major Holocene debris avalanche from Socompa overlies some lava flows at the W margin of the complex.
