Cerro Ananopa is a Quaternary basaltic lava cone and lava flow on the floor of the Río Motagua valley, WSW of the town of El Jicaro. Scattered basaltic lava flows occur nearby, mostly south of the Río Motagua, and several Quaternary rhyolitic lava flows were mapped north of the river. These are part of a series of Quaternary volcanic rocks erupted through Paleozoic-to-Mesozoic metamorphic rocks parallel to the major WSW-ENE-trending Motagua fault system, which cuts both sides of the Río Motagua valley.
