Tláloc, at the far northern end of a volcanic chain stretching northward from Popocatépetl, is a stratovolcano of Pliocene-Pleistocene age. Although typically considered to be the oldest volcano of the chain, recent work has documented a major plinian-subplinian eruption radiocarbon dated at about 31,500 years before present. The eruption produced a major pumice-fall deposit and associated pyroclastic flows.
