The Santo Domingo volcanic field lies in the center of the state of San Luis Potosí in the southern Basin and Range province of central México, ~50 km NE of the Ventura volcanic field. There are a group of four maars in the NW part of the field, along with several alkalic cinder cones and associated lava flows to the SE. The largest maar, La Joya de los Contreras, is 750 x 1,000 m. The Santo Domingo maars are the source of mantle-derived spinel-lherzolite xenoliths and deep-crustal granulite xenoliths.
