A broad area of Quaternary volcanic rocks lies in the highland between Cofre de Perote and Las Cumbres volcanoes. Two large arcuate E-facing scarps of uncertain origin, possibly eroded volcanic centers, are the most prominent features of the La Gloria volcanic field. The name originates from the town at its NW base, but is also known as the Desconocido-Tecomales volcanic field after the two large scarp ridges, 9-km-long Desconocido on the N and 6-km-long Tecomales on the S. Numerous pyroclastic cones on both sides of the escarpments are included in the Serdán-Oriental Volcanic Field for this catalog. The age of the most recent eruptions in this poorly studied region is not known, although some lava flows were classified by Negendank et al. (1985) as Holocene based on their youthful morphology. Carrasco-Nunez et al. (2006) described Holocene debris flow deposits, but characterized the complex as a probable Plio-Pleistocene age chain of aligned vents.
