The steep-sided Papayo lava dome and related dacitic lava flows was emplaced in a NE-SW oriented depression south of Telapon and north of Iztaccíhuatl in the Sierra Nevada range west of Mexico City. The lava flows extended about 10 km both WSW and ENE from the dome that rises about 230 m above the flows. The lava field covers about 84 km2 and has a volume of about 21 km3. Lavas overlie glacial moraines about 12,000 years old (Nixon, 1989), and on the western side the flows surround the glaciated late-Pleistocene lava and pyroclastic cone of Iztaltetlac. However, a radiometric age (K-Ar) of 118,000 years BP was reported by Macis et al. (2012), along with 80,000 BP for the Teyotl dacitic lava flows immediately south towards Iztaccíhuatl.
