The Blackfoot Volcanic Field (BVF) is a Quaternary volcanic field in SE Idaho around Blackfoot Reservoir, within a graben of the Northern Basin and Range Province. It consists of basalt flows that filled in the floors of Gem Valley, the Blackfoot Reservoir basin, Willow Creek drainage, and several other smaller valleys. Although distant from the edge of the Eastern Snake River Plain, the chemical composition of lava flows from the two locations are very similar; McCurry et al. (2011) noted the similarity of mineralogy, geochemistry, and bimodal volcanism. The USGS description states that the BVF is likely related to the Yellowstone hotspot via complex heat transfer away from the main hotspot track. Ages of BVF lavas are scarce, but they are believed to be similar in age to Gem Valley lavas (27.5 +/- 10 ka) (McCurry et al., 2011). In addition to the lava flows, there are three rhyolite domes, ranging in age from 58 +/- 7 ka (Heumann, 2004) to about 1.5 Ma (Luedke and Smith, 1983).
