The Cima volcanic field covers an area of about 150 km2 and contains 52 vents of Miocene-to-Pleistocene age. The youngest flows have been mapped as Holocene (Calif Div of Mines & Geol), and a radiocarbon date of 330-480 BP was obtained on the Black Tank cone. Later work suggests that the most recent activity was no younger than about 15,000 BP (Dohrenwend, in Wood and Kienle 1990; Wells et al. 1990). The youngest surface exposure ages obtained by Philipps (2003) were 11,500 and 11,600 years BP.
