A volcanic zone spanning ~350 km E-W in NE Tibet was identified by Tong et al. (1988) as having multiple Cenozoic volcanoes. Five locations were named on the small-scale map (Yongbocuo, Bamaoqiongzhong, Kushuihuan-Beishan, Heiguotou, and Yuyiehu). Although only Bamaoqiongzhong is mentioned in later research, this may be due to unknown synonyms or other language translations. However, within this area of the Northern Qiangtang Terrane between the Jinsha Suture to the N and the Longmu Co-Shuanghu Suture to the S, maps compiled by Wang et al. (2008) and Qi et al. (2023) did identify numerous volcanic areas, with a wide range of dates back to 46 Ma. The Bamaoqiongzong volcanic area, ~180 km W and exposed over ~100 km2, contains peralkaline phonolitic and foiditic rocks; although previous described as having a preserved edifice and a lava flow that overlies Quaternary lake deposits (Whitford-Stark, 1987), is further described and mapped as 28-30 Ma by Qi et al. (2023). Two areas were identified in Wang et al. (2026) and Qi et al. (2023) as early Pleistocene: adakitic rhyolites in the Henglianghu area, N of Duogecuoren Lake, was shown as being 3.2-2.5 Ma; non-adakitic felsic lavas in the Dongyue Lake 2.3 Ma area, immediately S of Duogecuoren Lake, had a reported 2.3 Ma age.
