The large 15 x 25 km early Pleistocene Karymshina caldera is located SW of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy and N of Gorely volcano. It produced about 800 km3 of rhyolitic ignimbrite about 1.78 million years ago, followed by rhyolitic post-caldera extrusive material (Bindeman et al, 2019). There are about a dozen extrusive domes surrounding the structure. Reported K-Ar dates from the domes are in the 2.2-0.5 Ma range. The Bolshe-Banny geothermal field is at the NW edge of the caldera area.
