The Arkhangelsky volcanic massif, designated as "Volcano 6.12" in a catalog of submarine Kuril Arc volcanic centers (Avdeiko, 1992), is located in the Bussol Strait between Simushir and Urup Islands, E of Chirpoi. In their review of research on this volcano, Blokh et al. (2019) describes it as follows: "The size of the massif at the base is 39 x 22 km, and the flat top measuring 4 x 21 km is located at a depth of ~50–600 m." They also note that the edifice slopes are steep and uneven, with large landslide blocks at the SSE base. Based mainly on the flat eroded top, Blokh et al. (2019) stated that the massif, composed of basalts and basaltic andesites, "most likely formed no later than the late Pleistocene" when it was subject to a long period of erosion near sea level and then underwent subsidence.
