Designated as "Volcano 8.10" in a catalog of submarine Kuril Arc volcanic centers (Avdeiko, 1992), this seamount is located ~22 km NNW of the Iturup Island peninsula with Etorofu-Atosanupuri stratovolcano. Although Gushchenko (1979) listed a submarine eruption in 1967 based on an oral communication from Gushkov, the description is more consistent with hydrothermal activity and dredging of nearby volcanic material. Blokh et al. (2021) summarized findings from 1982-1989 R/V Vulcanologist cruises, describing a large edifice with a flat summit area (~1.8 km diameter) and a peak at ~120 m depth; sounds detected during a September 1987 cruise were interpreted as "gas-hydrothermal" activity. The flat top of the edifice suggested a pre-Holocene age to Blokh et al. (2021), which they linked to erosion in the late Pleistocene that resulted in a sedimentary layer on the lower slopes.
