The andesitic Gajajima stratovolcano lies east of the main Ryukyu arc, 30 km WNW of Nakanoshima. The age of the volcano is mid-Pleistocene (Nakano et al., 2001-, mistranslated in the English version as late-Pleistocene to Holocene). Kogajajima (Little Gaja Island) lies 8 km ESE.
