Kobi-sho stratovolcano breaches the surface of the East China Sea to form a small 1-km-wide island. A few craters are present, but thin basalt flows make up the majority of the island. These basalts are typically porphyritic, characterized by phenocrysts of plagioclase (dominant), olivine, and clinopyroxene (Shinjo, 1998). It was probably active less than a few tens of thousand years ago, but is generally less than 0.2 million years old (Nakano et al., 2001; Shinjo, 1998).
