The NE part of Tidore Island off the west coast of Halmahera contains an eroded volcanic edifice with the 2.1 × 2.2 km Telaga caldera (also called Sabale). The date of the caldera-forming eruption is unknown, but Faral et al. (2022) suggested that it occurred between 22,000 and 17,500 cal. years BP, when an eruption produced thick (4-10 m) pumiceous dilute pyroclastic density currents within the caldera and north of the edifice, removing 1.20 ± 0.28 km3 of material (based on modeling of the previous cone). The caldera floor is occupied by a lake and a volcanic dome. Maitara Island is another volcanic edifice on the W flank just offshore.
