Bukit Hulu Lais is an eroded volcanic complex towards the NW end of a volcanic ridge ~30 km long offset ~7 km SW of the Great Sumatra Fault. A large NE-facing scarp SE of the summit hosts abundant thermal activity; the SW high point is Belirang Beriti and the SE high point is Beriti Besar. The area was mapped by Budiardjo et al. (2001) as the Pleistocene 907 ka Hululais Andesite. The crater and a large area to the north are part of a major geothermal development area.
