The Atherton Basalt Province covers an area of 1,800 km2 and contains 52 eruptive centers, including small lava shields, cinder cones, maars, and one diatreme. The maars, the only ones in Northern Queensland, range in age from 200,000 to 10,000 years before present (Stephenson, in Johnson et al., 1989).
