There are two main edifices that comprise the Southern Shepherd Islands volcano group. Mataso Island is a volcanic remnant and the only surface expression of a large submarine edifice. A submarine volcano with a central crater, ~15 km ESE of Mataso and distinct from that edifice, was discovered during a 1984 survey (Crawford et al., 1988).
