The 8-km-wide Ureparapara Island is topped by a 5-km-wide erosional caldera that is open to the sea on the NE. Sapper (1917) states that Ureparapara must have still been active in 1872, but the latest activity occurred during the Pleistocene (Ash et al., 1980).
