The eroded Pliocene-early Pleistocene Karioi stratovolcano lies along the Tasman Sea and is the westernmost volcano of the Alexandra Volcanic Group. Potassium-Argon (K-Ar) dates range from 2.92-2.16 Ma, but scoria cones, tuff rings, and basaltic lava flows primarily on the northern and eastern flanks are in part younger than the youngest K-Ar date of 1.8 Ma (Briggs, 1983).
