This area of the large Syunik Volcanic Upland was originally listed in IAVCEI (1973) as a group of 11 cinder cones, lava cones, and lava domes of Pliocene to mid-Pleistocene age in the Syunik Upland. Meliksetian (2013) included a geological map and described the entire upland as extending 70 km NW-SE by 35 km wide, with 163 volcanic features, mostly lava cones, cinder cones, and some rhyolitic domes. The portion of the upland NW of the Plio-Pleistocene Tskhouk stratovolcano, including Holocene pyroclastic cones and lava flows, is identified as the Tskhouk-Karckar volcano group. This catalog entry includes Pleistocene monogenetic cones and lava flows SW and SE of Tskhouk towards the Plio-Pleistocene Ishkhanasar stratovolcano, along with additional cones inside the crater and S of Ishkhanasar.
